Piopio is a small town in the Waitomo District. It is on State Highway 3 approximately 23 km from Te Kuiti.
Just 30 minutes from the world-famous Waitomo Caves, the Piopio area also boasts dramatic limestone formations, forest walks and cycling routes. It is probably best known as a filming location for ‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey’. The Denize Bluffs were used for numerous scenes, including Trollshaw Forest.
The village is small with a population of around 400 people. It is a place where you can experience true Kiwi hospitality. Try a locally-made berry ice cream at the Piopio orchard.
