Ophir is a small settlement in Central Otago, New Zealand. It is located between Alexandra and Ranfurly close to the east bank of the Manuherikia River.
Founded in 1863, like many of Central Otago’s heartland towns, Ophir is steeped in gold mining history. It’s also rich in charm.
It grew to become the biggest town in the Manuherikia Valley during the gold rush days. But the railway bypassed it, which hampered further growth.
Today, this small town boasts many historical buildings. They include New Zealand’s oldest post office. And Ophir is a popular stopover for cyclists on the Otago Central Rail.
