Visit Kohutapu Lodge to join the family in preparing a traditional ground-cooked Hangi feast. Maori have been cooking this way for centuries. And the team at Kohutapu will introduce you to hangi cooking techniques and the distinctive flavours it produces.
See the food being set on hot rocks in an earthen pit, before it is covered with wet sacks and dirt. It will then cook for up to 3 hours. After which you’ll experience the succulent, smoky, earthy flavours of the juicy meats and vegetables slow cooked beneath the ground.
The hangi is a mouth-watering buffet feast. But it is also an opportunity for you to join your hosts in celebration during this communal and social event.
Since opening its doors, this small family-owned business chooses to use tourism to give back to their community. Kohutapu Lodge & Tribal Tours uses tourism to provide positive change and offer opportunities for its local community. They provide educational and cultural exchange programmes in local schools and at traditional Marae, benefitting both visitors and local children alike.
