Pūkorokoro Miranda Shorebird Centre is a community facility, open to the public seven days a week. It is a centre for information, education and research on shorebirds. Shorebirds are here all year round, but numbers peak from January to March.
The Shorebird Centre opened in 1990. It is owned and operated by the Pūkorokoro Miranda Naturalists’ Trust, founded in 1975. At this centre you can view a wealth of birding and other local information through interactive displays and talks as well as habitat restoration projects with volunteer opportunities. Down the road from the Centre, you can follow the accessible boardwalks out to three bird hides.
The Shorebird Center is open 9-5 but you can go and see the birds whenever the tide is in. The best time to view the birds is within two hours either side of the high tide. Once the tide drops, the birds will go far out on the mudflats to feed.
