Puke Ariki Museum

Puke Ariki is a combined museum and library in New Plymouth, on the western side of the North Island.  It opened in June 2003 and is an amalgamation of the New Plymouth Public Library and the Taranaki Museum.

Its name, Māori for “hill of chiefs”, is taken from the Māori village that formerly occupied the site.  Puke Ariki has three permanent exhibition galleries that explore the region’s history, taonga and natural world as well as changing exhibitions.
