Wairoa

Wairoa is the main town of Northern Hawkes Bay. It is the gateway to Lake Waikaremoana, Mahia Peninsula and the wilderness of Te Urewera.

The closest town to the beautiful Te Urewera, Wairoa is a great place to base yourself for outdoor adventures. Wairoa in Maori means ‘Long Water’ and the town sits on the banks of the scenic Wairoa River.

The town is spread along the banks of the broad river.  And the riverside walk includes many interesting sites. Meanwhile, the local museum offers a great insight into the district’s intriguing Māori and European history.
